i would say clean out 25% of the water every week. do you have a heater and a filter? and what kind of fish do you have in the aquarium??

It's good practice to feed no more than the fish actually eats in a couple of minutes and change about 25 percent of the water every week. Partial water change frequency can be adjusted to accommodate the biological load, but weekly is a good starting point.

i have a betta and two cory cats that i just bought but before i got the cory cats i cleaned my tank every other week. i take out the fish and then rinse it out really well then put all the decor back and then put my fish back in it as soon as it is ready to go again,

It's not good to rinse and clean out your entire tank. You need to replace about 25% of the water each week; don't replace all of it. The water contains necessary bacteria the fish need to thrive and it also helps to maintain the same temperature, if you only replace a portion of the water.
Replacing all of it like you say you do is unhealthy for your fish 3:

sorry i temporarily couldn't sign in. i have since changed my tank cleaning routine just so you guys know and i have a gravel cleaner the i use to clean the tank every week with fish in it. my fish have been moved around from nm to pa and still no problems the fish are great. i missed getting my heater and am planning on going back for thanksgiving if possible and get my heater then if not i will buy another one and tell my mom that she can have hers back. i did have to replace the empty tank as it broke on the trip but everything else is great.

Hi! Sounds like you have been busy. Your cleaning schedule should look like this.... every week you do a pwc (partial water change) week 1 25% deep vacuum 1/3 of your gravel and all of the top of your gravel, week 2 25% pwc deep vacuum a separate portion 1/3 of your gravel and all off top of gravel, week 3 25% pwc deep vacuum final 1/3 of gravel and all the top again. Week 4, change out 50% of your water, no deep vacuum only clean top of gravel. Each time you do a pwc you are putting temperature matched, conditioned water, back in. The filter does not get changed until it is absolutely falling apart. If it gets gunky gently give it a swish in some of your dirty tank water. I have a feeling you do not have a working Nitrogen cycle based on your previous posts?? Your good bacteria lives in your gravel and your filter media and you need it. If you are not cycled let us know and we can help you. What are you testing your water with for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate? Your fish, if tropical need to be in water kept at 78 to 80 degrees so that heater is very important, particularly if your in a cold climate. Glad you came back to MAC look forward to getting to know you. Keep us posted! 😊
